Variation in medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscle activity with foot position.

External foot rotation (toe-out) significantly increases MG activation over LG in both standing and prone tasks. Toe-in shows no significant MG-LG difference, failing to isolate LG as hypothesized. Descriptively, MG activity was numerically higher than LG across all positions, though not always statistically significant.

CONCLUSION

Clinical rehabilitation and calf training programs should incorporate toe-out positioning to specifically target MG activation. EMG feedback could additionally support this by helping visualize and monitor MG/LG activation patterns, including LG activation, which is otherwise difficult to isolate through foot position alone.
