Efficacy of electromyographic biofeedback and electrical stimulation following arthroscopic partial meniscectomy: a randomized controlled trial
EMG biofeedback vs. electrical stimulation for rehab after arthroscopic meniscectomy (N=45, 3 groups of 15: home exercise, biofeedback, stimulation). Biofeedback shortened walking-aid use overall and, at 2 weeks, improved Lysholm scores versus home exercise and produced greater VMO/VL contraction power versus both other groups. Electrical stimulation showed no significant advantage.
CONCLUSION
Together, the reduced walking-aid time, enhanced knee extensor function, and better Lysholm scores demonstrate that EMG biofeedback can meaningfully speed up functional recovery after knee surgery. Even a short, 2-week intervention was effective when started immediately after surgery.
